NTS Radio w/ Phambinho, London, UK

A mix as an allegory of a life. London-based Asian American artist, choreographer and performer Monica Tolia takes the listener on a journey that swings between eras and genres, from the East to the West coast of America, all the way to the UK. Hollywood cinema references, old school hiphop legends, stereotype-exploding parody rap, West Coast indie rock, R&B and electronic... all sounds and energies that have influenced Monica as an artist. Nested in the mix are two of their own sound works 'Kyoko', and an excerpt from the performance 'a snake in the house means the family will never want' (touring live starting 15 June, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England).

Performing 'Kyoko Returns' at Décalé party.

‘When dusk arises, agitated spirits awake A night on planet earth, Décalé A platform for nocturnal creatures and loud existential insurgents Disobedient children will come together and rise from the dark to encounter experimental collapsing, flawless sounds, visuals and people. Together they will declare the unspoken, and embrace the hybrid and reactive nature of their collective experience. Together, we rewrite reality now, against distorted norms, for an alternate tomorrow.’
Our intention is to break down the boundaries of what a 'night' could be framed as, subverting the frontiers of performativity with live music and DJ sets. Our nights are designed in a way that elevates immersivity and connections between people, particularly for the transgenerational LGBTQIA+ communities and their allies. Décalé’s mission is to create a safe and fun space in an heartwarming environment reinvigorated by visuals and uncompromising sound.
Décalé is programmed and run by Chooc Ly Tan and Anne Duffau.
