Monica Tolia (she/they), aka Monica Tolia Fong 方美嘉, is a London-based visual artist and communer / mother / shifter / performer. Monica’s work is rooted in the embodied practices related to their diasporic heritage, practicing kinship, collaboration and intimate entanglements across human and more-than-human worlds. They world sensory performances and collaborative events that delve into the myths of historical and contemporary Eurocentric narratives, media and hyper-technological affects driving the terms of agency, connection and self-determination. Monica looks at how embedding animism and the thinking-sensing embodiment contained within Taoism, can teach us how to create, co-exist and dream the difficult materiality of late-capitalism into alternate worlds. From 2021-2023, they were part of the ESEA diaspora collective Have you eaten yet?, organising performance-based events and collaborations in the locale of Deptford on the intersections of food, migration, art/activism & creating affectionate space. Since 2026, Monica has been focusing on hand-labour in wearable sculpture, textile and craft, reflecting on their experience of autistic burnout and de-presencing from 2023-2026. |
